Calisthenics athlete Chris Heria regularly shares exercise tips on his YouTube channel, demonstrating how he uses bodyweight training to shred his physique. In a new video, Heria takes on a series of bodyweight-only exercises from some of his favorite anime shows, to see how tough those workouts really are.
He starts off with a one-armed hold from the martial arts show Baki. After multiple attempts where he fails to get his second hand off the floor, Heria is forced to admit this is beyond him. “I really thought I had that,” he says, “but it was a lot more difficult than it looks.”
He then moves onto Goku’s one-armed pushups and handstand pushups from Dragon Ball Z. And because Goku performed those moves in increased artificial gravity, Heria decides to add resistance in the form of a 30-pound weighted vest.
“The best way to learn this is to master a handstand first, of course, then start mastering the negative of the handstand,” he says. “Eventually, once that gets really easy, come down nice and slow, the next step is just to push back up.”
Finally, Heria takes on the training routine that has been tried by just about every fitness influencer on YouTube: the One Punch Man workout, consisting of 100 situps, 100 pushups, 100 air squats and a 6-mile run. And while he doesn’t gain the power to take out his enemies with a single punch, Heria says he enjoys the challenge.
